The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a report focusing on HPV vaccine coverage and safety among adolescent girls aged 13-17 in the U.S. According to the report, only 33.4% of girls received all three recommended doses in 2012, similar to the 2011 rate.

Survey results indicate that parents' hesitation to have their daughters vaccinated may explain a portion of the low coverage rates. About 25% of parents reported that they did not plan on getting their daughters vaccinated within the next year. A belief that the vaccine wasn't necessary (19.1%), the lack of a recommendation from a health care provider (14.2%), and safety concerns (13.1%) were among the most commonly cited explanations for not receiving the vaccine.

Several MemTV member agencies offer the HPV vaccine including The Shelby County Health Department, CHOICES, and Planned Parenthood.
