The American Medical Association adopted a resolution calling for more research on over-the-counter (OTC) access to oral contraceptives (OCs) and urging the FDA to encourage pharmaceutical companies to submit the necessary data for an OTC switch for OCs.

According to a nationwide survey by Ibis Reproductive Health, 62% of women reported being strongly or somewhat in favor of oral contraceptives being available over-the-counter.

37% of the respondents said they were likely to use an OTC OC if it were available. This translates to a potential market of 11 million adult women in the U.S. using oral contraceptives through OTC access.
